Simple Steps To Update Printer Firmware
Posted by Greg Nowak on
Every company releases firmware updates time and again to enhance the device’s capability and fix the pertaining issues. Today we are going to learn how to update printer firmware taking ‘HP Color LaserJet CM6040 MFP Series’ as an example.
(Note: While you are doing update printer firmware, make sure that nobody is printing to the machine, basically machine has to be in a ready state and stay that way for the entire process which will take about 10 minutes. It is easy to do it after hours or while no one’s there because it can interrupt the process which can cause problems with your machine of which the company takes no warranty.)
Steps for upgrading your printer firmware:
Step 1: Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to internet.
Step 2: Generally the firmware update notification will be sent to you by the company on your registered email address. You can visit the link provided or else you can visit the company’s website, enter your printer model number and download the available firmware update file in your computer. In this case, I visited the link ‘www.hp.com/go/cljcm6040mfp_firmware’.
Step 3: Download the file in your local machine.
Step 4: Go to my computer and locate the printer which you want to upgrade. Right click on the device and go to Properties -> Ports and copy the IP address. Or you can simply print the network setup file and note down the IP address.
Step 5: Go to the browser in your computer and then enter the IP address of the printer. (Note: The computer and printer should be on the same network)
Step 6: This IP address will take you to the configuration page of your respective printer. Usually there will be a firmware update tab available on the very first page. But in case of HP you have to click on Print tab. Now you need to choose the file which you have downloaded and click the ‘Apply’ button.
This will take about a minute or two to send it to the printer and the printer will take around 5 to 10 minutes to upgrade itself. This is the most crucial period, be very careful that nobody uses the printer, just wait and the printer will automatically restart itself once the update completes.
The update is necessary because a lot of softwares on the computer is being updated and you need to just update the inside of the printer so that it can understand the different languages and processes.
