What is Error 20 on Xerox Phaser?

Error 20 is an error code in Xerox laser printers which indicates interior hardware damage.  This printer problem usually occur after installation of new parts or supplies. It means the installation was not done correctly or a part is already worn out and needs replacing.  Here’s what to do when Error 20 Code appears on Xerox Phaser 6500.

What are the causes of Error 20?

There are several reasons for this printer error to happen. It is likely to have something to do with one or two of the replaced interiors or supplies including toner cartridge, imaging drum unit, precision rollers, transfer kit and main charge grid.

How to fix printer error 20?

Toner cartridge

When this error code appears, one of the first thing to check is the toner level. It might be too low to print with consistency that it requires replacement. If you have replaced the toner cartridge and the error persists, reinstall the cartridge. Turn off the printer wait for a few seconds before turning it back on.

Imaging Drum Unit

In most cases, this error code serves as warning that the drum unit has already reached the end of its lifecycle. Drum unit contains more toner than cartridges so when it’s depleted, change it immediately to continue printing. If the drum unit still has sufficient amount of supply or is new, try to remove and reinstall it again.  Make sure that it is safely locked in place. Turn off the printer for a few seconds than turn it back on.

Transfer belt

Transfer kit is a sensitive and a vital part of the printer. When it’s worn out, it is advisable to replace it before continuing on printing. Transfer kit if not replaced causes much more damage to the printer. Turn off and unplug the printer and let it cool down for a few minutes. Open the front cover and push the lever that locks in the transfer belt and raise it carefully to remove it. Lift it gently on the side and slide it gently to completely remove. Replace the transfer belt with the new one. Make sure to lock it safely before putting back the lid. Plug and turn on the printer.

These are the common fixes for Xerox Phaser 6500 error code 20. If the problem persists, call in a printer technician to completely evaluate or diagnose the printer.
